A Muslim female lawyer was targeted and assaulted after she exposed corruption in a village named Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh.
Video of the assualt emerged on social media showing Advocate Firdous Jahan and her family attacked by the husband of village head and his associates. The attack was carried out in broad daylight after Jahan filed a formal complaint exposing corruption.
The main accused, Naseem and several men surrounded the car of Jahan, damaged it with sticks and rods and attacked her and her family.
Speaking about the assualt, Jahan said, “The attack was meant as a warning message for me. I had complained about their corruption and when investigation was done, the allegations were found to be true leading to the removal of his financial status and powers in the village.”
Jahan also said that notice and Naseem was already sent and despite knowing the truth, the men opted to act violently.
“They threatened us by saying that this is what happens after I complained while they were attacking. If a lawyer is not safe for merely following law, how safe are the ordinary people”? She questioned.
The video of the incident has sparked concerns in the public domain. Activists and other social media users voiced their concerns and said that such attacks reveal a harsher truth : that a lawyer isn’t safe for exposing corruption and that truth comes with a price. Many also highlighted that if action is not taken, it normalises such crimes and warned about such incidents happening in the future.
Police is yet to make any official statement. There have been no arrests so far. Jahan has demanded action against all the accused and urged the police to ensure safety of everyone who speaks the truth.
