Geneva: At the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the International Muslim Women’s Union (IMWU) has expressed serious concern over the shrinking civic space in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, stating that fundamental rights are being systematically curtailed following the constitutional changes of August 2019.

According to Global Mirror, speaking during the General Debate under Agenda Item 4, IMWU representative Sobia Shawl emphasized that civic space — including freedom of expression, assembly, association, and political participation — is a fundamental right protected under international law, not a privilege granted by governments.

She highlighted that in recent years, the situation in IIOJK has undergone a dramatic transformation marked by extended internet shutdowns, preventive detentions of political leaders and youth, increased surveillance of journalists and civil society organizations, and restrictions on peaceful assembly and protest.
