NEW DELHI — In a disturbing incident in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, a muezzin was allegedly abused and assaulted by police outside a mosque on Wednesday. Muhammad Irfan, the muezzin of Medina Masjid, claimed that he was confronted by officers over the loudspeaker used at the mosque, despite having permission from the district administration.

Irfan claims police officers from the city’s Sarwat police post used abusive language, made hurtful comments, and beat him when he objected. The incident has sparked outrage, with CCTV footage circulating online.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Muslims in the region, adding to a growing list of concerns about their treatment.

“I told them that we have written permission from the district administration for the loudspeaker. Even after hearing this, they continued to abuse me. When I objected, they started assaulting me,” Irfan was quoted by media reports as saying on Thursday. He added that the entire episode was recorded on the CCTV camera outside the mosque.
